How to Get Back on the Healthy Eating Train!

Posted by on

Hello everyone, and Happy New Year!

It’s Zoë coming in for a guest blog to share with you some of my favorite healthy eating recipes and tips. I love eating healthy and filling my body with the nutrients and nourishment it needs. However, every year during the end of December my healthy eating habits inevitably get derailed during the festive fun! That’s okay, I don’t believe in shaming myself for indulging or feeling guilty about the extra treats. The great thing about having healthy eating habits, is that it’s only a matter of time until the indulging starts to feel heavy and unappetizing. I like to start my new year off fresh with a healthy boost from my favorite recipes.

My first tip to getting back on track is to have compassion for yourself. Remind yourself that you’re allowed to indulge, and that indulging for a week or two (or three) won’t make or break your healthy habits!

The second thing I like to do is to kick the sugar. Did you know that sugar is more addicting than nicotine? It’s true, and unfortunately so many of the best holiday treats are jam packed with processed sugar. A great way to ween yourself off the sugar cravings in January, is to have some healthy no sugar added treats in the house. That way, if your sweet tooth is craving a delectable morsel, you can appease it with a healthier version.

Luckily, with the help of the Free To Be team, I’ve been introduced to my new all-time favorite holiday “treat”, Bliss (Snow) Balls. If you practiced at the Festivus Fleaux, than you already know what I’m talking about. They are a delicious treat packed with all the good things and none of the bad. I’m talking no sugar added and no junky ingredients - and they taste like cookie dough. For real! Best of all, they are super simple and quick to make.

The secret ingredient? Besides love, it’s sea salt! Yep, a little bit of sea salt goes a long way to satisfy those sinful junky cravings.

My last tip is to always keep a hearty, healthy salad in the fridge. I love to make a big batch of these hearty salads on a Sunday night to have on hand for meals and snacking during the week ahead. My salads aren’t always the same, but they follow the same format to ensure maximum satisfaction.

Check it the recipe for both of these gems below!

Bliss (Snow) Balls

Time: 90 minutes (from start to eating)

Makes 24 balls

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups walnuts
  • 2 cups dates (pitted)
  • 1 ½ cups shredded unsweetened coconut
  • 2 tbls coconut oil
  • 2 tbls hemp seeds
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • ½ tsp sea salt

Steps:

  1. Pulse walnuts & 1 cup of the coconut together in a food processor until they make a crumbly texture
  2. Add dates, coconut oil, vanilla, and sea salt.
  3. Use a tablespoon to scoop the mixture and roll together to form a ball.
  4. In a shallow dish, pour ½ cup of coconut.
  5. Roll the bliss balls in coconut- now it’s a snowball!
  6. Lay blissballs on a baking sheet and pop into the freezer for 1 hour to set!
  7. SERVE CHILLED!

Hearty, Healthy Salad

Time: 40 min

Servings: 4-6

  1. Prep a grain. My favorites are: quinoa, wild rice, and farro.
    1. Cook per box instructions
  2. After your chosen grain is cooked, allow to cool for a few minutes.
  3. Add a leafy green. My favorites are: spinach, kale, or arugula.
  4. Add nuts or seeds for some crunch, like sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, or chopped almonds.
  5. Add a dried fruit. I love dried cranberry for a little chewy tartness.
  6. Toss together a simple dressing. My go-to’s are a honey-balsamic or a lemon-dijon vinaigrette.
  7. Voila!

Side note: This salad is particularly satisfying while it’s still a little warm.
