The Power To Create Peace in New Orleans

Posted by on

My name is Chelsea and I am a Free To Be community member, an OG FTB Teacher (shout out to that little house on Tchoup!) and the Founder of Project Peaceful Warriors.

Project Peaceful Warriors is a Non-Profit here in New Orleans dedicated to providing trauma informed yoga and mindfulness programming to schools — empowering students and educators with tools they can use to reduce stress and anxiety, combat burnout, and lead happier and healthier lives. To create safe and healthy learning environments in schools, we believe in creating a culture shift using the tools of yoga, mindfulness, and self-care for students and for educators. We believe that when everyone is on the same page, learning and growing together, schools will see positive, sustainable changes in student and educator wellness as well as school culture.

In New Orleans, students experience trauma at a shockingly disproportionate rate compared to the rest of the country. According to the Institute of Women and Ethnic Studies (IWES) “In That Number” Campaign (2015) which surveyed New Orleans youth ages 11-15, 54 percent of youth in New Orleans have lost someone close to them, to murder; 40 percent have seen someone shot, stabbed, or beaten; 38 percent have witnessed domestic violence; and 29 percent worry about not being loved. The Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder rate among NOLA youth is four times the rate of the national average.

Trauma in our city continues to be an unrelenting force. But, we are not powerless. We have our breath, and community support that over the past year has helped over 1300 students and 700 teachers use breath to find their power to create peace.

This Giving Tuesday (November 27th) we are are asking YOU, the Free To Be Community, to fuel us as catalysts for change. You know firsthand the power of breath, the power of movement, and the power of being in your body. When you support Project Peaceful Warriors, you give students and teachers across the city of New Orleans the opportunity to experience that power too. How can you support?

  1. Donate!
  2. Snag a Peace Ya’ll t-shirt or hoodie on Giving Tuesday at the Free To Be Power Yoga and REP IT HARD! (Can’t make it to the studio? Email and I’ll get you hooked up)
  3. Volunteer! (Email Chelsea for the deets!)

Know that you have an incredible gift. Within you is the power to create peace.  On behalf of our entire team, thank you for sharing your gift and being our partners in peace and supporting the growth of a community of resilient warriors, empowered and emboldened by the tools of yoga and mindfulness.
